TearLab

tearlab-womanNewer approaches in diagnosing dry eye include tear osmolarity – how concentrated or dilute the tears are and interferometry, which provides an incredibly detailed analysis of lipid layer integrity and thickness. Tear osmolarity has been shown to have the best predictive value for diagnosing Dry Eye Disease of any single test.

TearLab’s sophisticated lab on a chip technology tests a tiny tear sample to measure Osmolarity or the salt content in the tears. The Doctor will test both eyes and will take the highest number of the two tests, to generate Your Osmolarity Number. Your Osmolarity Number gives doctors a meaningful measure of the health and stability of the protective tear film that covers the surface of your eyes. The number generated correlates with the severity of the disease.

Oculus Keratograph 5M

OCULUS Keratograph 5M

OCULUS Keratograph 5M is a cutting-edge piece of technology known as a corneal topographer. Since meibomian gland dysfunction is so critical to normal tear function, meibomography is a valuable means of evaluating the meibomian glands structure. The Oculus Keratograph 5M provides meibomography, tear menisus height, lipid layer analysis and objective non-invasive tear breakup measurement.

BlephEx

BlephexBlephEx is a painless in-practice procedure performed by your eyecare professional. A revolutionary new patented BlephEx handpiece is used to very precisely and carefully, spins a medical grade micro-sponge along the edge of your eyelids and lashes, removing scurf and debris and exfoliating your eyelids.

The procedure lasts about 6 -8 minutes and is well tolerated. Most patients simply report a tickling sensation. A numbing drop is usually placed in each eye prior to treatment for increased comfort.

IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy

IPL intense pulsed light therapyIPL uses a high-intensity xenon flash lamp to deliver light energy to the lower lid area, which is thought to liquefy congealed lipids while also sealing off blood supply which carry inflammatory mediators to the meibomian glands. IPL has been used successfully to treat patients with rosacea, a skin disorder that often has associated ocular problems such as MGD.

LipiFlow

lipiflowTearScience produces the LipiFlow®  device for treating MGD.  The LipiFlow device provides vectored thermal pulsation to warm the meibomian glands through the inside of the lids and gently massage thickened meibum (lipid) and debris from the gland. This system is cleared by the US FDA for the treatment of MGD and evaporative dry eye. With hundreds of patients successfully treated in our center, LipiFlow has proven to be safe and effective.
